A recent siam weed identification workshop brought together Gulf Savannah NRM’s Land Protection Officer, Mia Beki, and the Wakaman Indigenous Rangers to strengthen local biosecurity knowledge and build on-ground weed management skills.
The workshop explored the identification, treatment and management of several high-profile weeds, while also providing an overview of Queensland’s broader biosecurity obligations. Following the classroom session, participants headed into the field for hands-on identification training focused on siam weed and other invasive species.
Mareeba Shire Council’s Graham Wienert also joined the workshop, sharing his expertise and helping guide the practical field activities.
The Wakaman Rangers will play an important role in natural disaster recovery efforts, supporting future ground surveying and weed management programs. In the coming weeks, the team will also undertake ACDC training to further develop the skills needed for field operations.
This project is funded by the Australian and Queensland Government under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.
